Yulia Tymoshenko’s husband sought political asylum in the Czech Republic

Alexander Timoshenko, the husband of the former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, has requested political asylum in the Czech Republic, said on Friday Reuters, referring to a source within the Czech government.

“He applied for political asylum in 2011, but the decision [concerning his request] is not yet adopted,” said the source.

Yulia Tymoshenko is currently serving a sentence of seven years in prison for having exceeded his authority at the conclusion of the gas contract with Russia in 2009. The contract, deemed “detrimental” for Ukraine, was challenged by the current authorities of the country.
