Volcano / Chile: ashes reach southern Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO, June 8, 2011

The ash cloud emitted during the eruption of the volcano Puyehue Chile spread to southern Brazil.

This volcano, located 800 km south of Santiago, crippling several airports in Chile erupted on Saturday.
On Tuesday, Brazil’s airlines have had to cancel 43 flights turn towards the Argentine capital Buenos Aires to suspend the association with Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay and Peru.

Volcanic ash pose a hazard to aviation safety. Once it enters the engines of aircraft, the cloud forms a kind of volcanic glass layer on the rotors and cause obstruction of the openings through which air reaches the various engine parts.
