Venezuela: Chavez calls media to dispel rumours of death

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez reappeared on television Monday after an eight-day silence, scoffing at rumors that his health took a turn for the worse and saying he plans to be back home Thursday after his latest round of cancer treatment in Cuba.

“I think we should get used to living with these rumors, which are part of psychological warfare, the dirty war,” said the Venezuelan leader during his speech.

Today, Hugo Chavez is in Cuba, where he underwent radiotherapy sessions and he called on Venezuelan television to deliver his message.

Hugo Chavez traveled to Cuba on April 14. Since then he has used his Twitter account to communicate with the outside world. Before his departure, he spoke to his supporters from the balcony of his Miraflores presidential palace, saying it was undergoing extensive treatment resulting in a significant impact on his body.

October 7, a presidential election will take place in Venezuela. In the election, incumbent President Hugo Chavez, in power since 1999, will face Henrique Capriles, candidate of the Venezuelan opposition.
