New item in the diplomatic crisis between Moscow and Ankara. The Turkish military announced Wednesday that it has as an audio recording of warnings sent to two Russian pilots, one of whom died after Turkey defeated their plane the day before at the Syrian border. What prove that Russia has indeed encroached on Turkish airspace.
“You are approaching Turkish airspace”
“Here the Turkish Air Force. You approach the Turkish airspace. Head to the south immediately, “can be heard in English on several occasions recording broadcast by the British tabloid Daily Mail. Turkey claims to have issued about ten warnings in five minutes.
Yet a man introduced as the surviving Russian pilot rescued during a special operation, assured earlier to television channels that they received “no warning” and do have had “no contact” with the Turkish army. “If (the Turkish army) wanted to warn us, they could have on our show by flying parallel. There was nothing at all,” he added. According to the pilot, he was “about to go the air base” (from Hmeimim near Latakia, in north-western Syria) after a combat mission. Moscow assures the plane was flying over Syrian territory.
Russia asks retaliation
But Ankara maintains, the aircraft was in Turkish airspace. Even if Recep Tayyip Erdogan says he has “absolutely no intention to escalate after this case” , the tension is still not fallen since Tuesday. While Moscow demanded an apology from Turkey, the head of Turkish diplomacy excluded to make amends.
The incident caused the fury of the Russian President, who referred to a “stab”. The foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, denounced a “planned provocation” before calling Thursday all Russian citizens present in Turkey to return home. And to the threats of “retaliatory” made by Vladimir Putin, his Prime Minister requested that the government is preparing a series of economic retaliatory measures after the “act of aggression”.
