The great powers challenge Iran’s nuclear

VIENNA (Reuters) – The five permanent members of the Security Council of the United Nations has again urged Iran on Thursday to allay fears about its nuclear program and hoped that negotiations with Tehran lead to real results.

Iran resumed in mid-April in Istanbul talks with the group of “Six” (U.S., Russia, China, France and Britain, plus Germany) that had been interrupted for more than a year. These negotiations should continue on May 23 in Baghdad. Talks between Iran and the IAEA should also take place on May  14 and 15 in the Iranian diplomatic mission in Vienna.

In a joint statement released at a meeting in Vienna at the headquarters of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), United States, France, Britain, China and Russia call on Iran to give Inspectors of the organization access to “sites and information” related to this program.

“We remain concerned about the persistent failure of Iran to fulfill its obligations under the resolutions of the Security Council of the UN,” write the five countries, referring to repeated requests to Tehran to abandon its controversial nuclear program.

According to an IAEA report published on November 8, Iran is pursuing a program of research and development may be related to military activities and in particular built on the site of Parchin a “containment chamber” to carry out testing of explosives.

Western diplomats suspect Iran of trying to “cleanse” the incriminating evidence of the site before the arrival of IAEA inspectors, a charge denied by Tehran.

The Director General of IAEA, Yukiya Amano, wants its inspectors visit to Parchin “as soon as possible”.

“We want to have access not only to the site, but to information and people related to Parchin,” he told Reuters on the sidelines of a conference in St. Gallen, Switzerland, before reporting “activities “on the site.

Iran is suspected by the world powers seeking to develop nuclear weapons under cover of a civilian nuclear program. Tehran ensures that its atomic program is solely for generating electricity.
