Organic Cucumbers from Two Provinces of Spain, whose activities were suspended, were carriers of dangerous bacteria. According to experts, the infection causes enterohemorrhagic bacterium Escherichia coli (E. coli). The bacterium E. coli is often present in the intestines of people and most of its strains are harmless, but some species can cause severe diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.
In Germany there are already more than 300 people infected with the infection. Currently, the Europeans suspect that the dangerous bacteria on the vegetables had already penetrated into the territory of Great Britain, Denmark, Sweden and the Netherlands.
The bacterium is transmitted to humans by eating contaminated foods: raw or have not undergone thermal treatment of meat products. Source of infection can also be unwashed vegetables and fruits.
Most patients with symptoms of E. coli – bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting – usually recover within 10 days, but in a small number of patients the disease can take a severe form of life-threatening.
