Spain: Teachers strike against austerity

MADRID – On Tuesday many teachers were on strike in Spain to protest against government’s austerity policy.

According to the unions, the rate of participation in the movement, followed in 14 of 17 regions, was 80%. This is the most important strike in the Spanish education system since the beginning of the year.

The austerity measures adopted by the government of Mariano Rajoy result in Education by a number of teachers down, the larger classes or even university fees higher.

Virginia Fernandez, a representative of the Madrid branch of the teachers’ union FESTIVAL, said many parents, including primary, kept their children home as a sign of support for the strike.
