MADRID – Thousands of Spaniards protesting throughout the country Sunday their opposition to labor market reforms recently adopted at the initiative of the Government. A massive rally was organized from mid-day in Madrid.
The main unions had called for rallies in 57 cities, starting with Cordoba in the south to end the evening in Barcelona, Seville, Toledo and Valencia.
The reforms allow firms vulnerable to denounce the collective agreements and change the working time, duties and salaries, by facilitating the layoffs, which become cheaper for the employer.
The government justifies these measures by the need to pull the country out of economic crisis and unemployment hitting nearly 23% of the workforce, making it the highest among the 17 countries of the euro area.
