Serbian President resigns

Serbian President Boris Tadic has officially announced his resignation on Wednesday, reported local media.

The latter point out that yesterday, M.Tadic had already informed his top aides of his decision. The President of the Serbian Parliament, Slavica Djukic Dejanovic, is expected to announce on Wednesday to hold a presidential election on May 6, the same day as the parliamentary and local elections.

Analysts said the departure of President Tadic was necessary to strengthen its position at the head of the Democratic Party in parliamentary elections.

Tadic was elected president in 2004. The presidential term in Serbia lasts five years and one person can only be elected twice. Tadic, however, can run for a third consecutive term, as Serbia’s new constitution was adopted in 2006 and his first term does not count.
