Serbia EU candidate: Decision postponed to March 2012

The leaders of the European Union have pushed to March 2012 the decision on the granting of candidate status to Serbia, the Western media report citing a draft declaration.

The 27-nation EU should have to decide on granting the status during the summit that began on 8 December in Brussels.

On Monday the foreign ministers of EU member countries discussed the preparedness of Serbia in the first step towards membership, but have not taken any decision. Last week, German Chancellor Angela Merkel called for to match the invitation of Serbia with the normalization of relations between Belgrade and Pristina (capital of Kosovo).

Serbia has filed an application for membership in 2009. The EU is a priority and the preservation of Kosovo, whose independence was proclaimed in 2008.
