Pyongyang / Washington: informal negotiations in Berlin

A think tank says North Korean and American delegations have held informal talks in Aspen Institute in Berlin, local media reported on referring to representatives of the organization on Monday.

The source has not released details of the meeting.

The Aspen Institute had hosted a similar meeting last year.

Relations between Pyongyang and Washington soured by the North Korean nuclear program.

North Korea declared itself a nuclear power in 2005 and conducted a series of tests that have forced the UN to impose sanctions against Pyongyang. The country’s cooperation with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was discontinued in 2009.

Late February, North Korea pledged to suspend its nuclear testing and uranium enrichment in return for U.S. food aid. However, on March 16, Pyongyang announced its intention to launch in April a long-range rocket in charge of the satellite Kwangmyongsong-3 (Star Light), causing a new international outcry.
