Palestine to UNESCO: Canada cut its funding

Canada suspends any further financial contribution to UNESCO following the admission of the Palestinian state, said Minister of Foreign Affairs John Baird quoted by the Western media.

Canada contributes annually nearly $ 10 million to UNESCO as a fixed contribution, which will be frozen now . The current funding are still in force, but no new commitments shall be made, said the minister.

This membership does not promote the peace process in the Middle East, said Mr Baird.

The Palestinian Authority Monday has become a full member of UNESCO, 107 participants of the 36th General Conference of the organization voted in favor of membership. Canada was among those who voted against.

The U.S. has also cut funding to the UN agency, which represents 22% of its budget. Washington was to pay $ 60 million to UNESCO before the end of November.
