Nigeria: 18 people killed in a raid of suspected thieves

Eighteen people were killed and six others seriously injured by a group of 150 people, thieves with guns and machetes, who attacked their village in the state of Zamfara in northern Nigeria,  said police source  on Sunday.

“The band of armed robbers went door to door killing or wounding the victims” said a police officer on condition of anonymity.

“In all likelihood, he added, the attack was carried out in retaliation for killings by militias formed by villagers to stop cattle rustling.”

Several armed robbers who had escaped the attacks of the villagers got together and against attacked, he said.

No arrests were made ​​but police and soldiers were deployed in the area to prevent further attacks. August 10, two villages had been attacked in the area causing casualties.
