JOHANNESBURG – JOHANNESBURG (Sipa) – Nearly 12 million school children South African choir sang Wednesday morning in honor of Nelson Mandela, kicking off celebrations of 94th anniversary of former president and national icon.
Nelson Mandela was to spend the day with family at his estate in south-east.
In honor of his birthday, communities must devote 67 minutes of the day to charities and projects for the needy, one minute for each 67 years of commitment to Nelson Mandela, symbol of the struggle against the apartheid. Political and religious leaders urged everyone to “make every day a Mandela.”
Greeting messages poured in from around the world, U.S. President Barack Obama paying special tribute to the man who “changed the course of history, transformed his country, the continent and the world.”
