Slovenia will install in the coming days at the Croatian border “technical obstacles”, including if necessary a “fence” to better control the flow of migrants entering the country , announced Tuesday the prime minister Miro Cerar.
“We have decided (…) to start building in the coming days of temporary technical obstacles to the Schengen border with Croatia. These obstacles, including fences if necessary, will aim to lead migrants to border posts, “said centrist leader at a press conference in Ljubljana.
Prevent the influx of migrants
Miro Cerar, whose country saw more than 171,000 transit migrants and refugees since mid-October, justified the measure by the prospect of a new influx of 30,000 people in the next days, even as Austria, where flows downstream flows , intends to cap it according to “6000” daily admissions. “Our borders remain open but we want to end the dispersion (and) control the flow so as to reduce it to a manageable level,” assured Miro Cerar, evoking, failing that, a risk of “flooding” of his small country 2 million.
Slovenia, the gateway of Europe
Slovenia became the main country of migrants entering the Schengen area since the closure of Budapest by its border with Croatia on the night of October 16 to 17. Mr. Cerar, who said it had advised its Austrian and Croatian counterparts of the planned measures, Tuesday lamented the lack of efficiency of the European Union and its partners in the management of the crisis. An EU summit is being held on this issue again on Wednesday and Thursday in Valletta. “The commitments made in Brussels by the leaders of the countries on the eastern route have not been kept. The flow of migrants has neither reduced nor slowed,” said the Slovenian head of government.
