Mexico: At least 31 killed in a violent fight between prisoners

A violent brawl involving prisoners armed with homemade knives, sticks and even stones had 31 dead in a prison in northern Mexico.

In a statement, the Department of Public Safety of the state of Tamaulipas said that 13 inmates were injured during clashes in the penitentiary of Altamira, a town near the Gulf of Mexico.

The brawl began when prisoners broke into a section of the prison which was prohibited, and attacked other prisoners who had been transferred, according to a spokesman for the ministry.

According to local media, the brawl involved members of the Gulf Cartel and the Zetas, but authorities have not confirmed the information. The state of Tamaulipas has seen bloody turf wars between the two organizations formerly associated.

Leaders of the state of Tamaulipas reported that several of the victims were killed by knives craft.

Soldiers and marines eventually managed to regain control of the prison, said the spokesman.
