A viral video of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev dancing to the 1990’s Russian pop song “American Boy” popped up on YouTube Tuesday. The video shows Medvedev summoning the past with his dated dance moves to the pop hit. Reuters described it accurately stating, “Sporting a form-fitting silver jacket … Medvedev somewhat awkwardly wiggles his hips and kicks up his heels with other party guests in the half-minute clip posted late Tuesday.” Much fun was had by the President and he could care less about his dance critics, which he had many on Twitter. “You dance like my father!” a Twitter user said to him. In good humor Medvedev replied, “Age-wise that seems to be the case.” He also said, “We’re rocking out last year at a reunion with my class. The dances/music are those, from the past.” Medvedev is an keen Twitter user and a lot more liberal than his prime minister, Vladimir Putin.
Though Medvedev seemed to take the video all in good fun and enjoyed tweeting to his followers about it, not all involved are happy about the popular video. The now viral video prompted Natalya Timakova, a Kremlin spokesperson to direct blame onto the party’s caterer. She stated the caterer recording and posting the President dancing showed a lack of privacy and respect.
The song “American Boy”, is a Russian pop song that hit the charts in the 90’s. It is about escaping the country with a foreigner. A remake of the song has been done by rapper Kayne West and singer Estelle.
