Bernardino Leon, UN envoy for Libya, announced the appointment of a government of national unity. But its composition which comprises a majority of people from Misrata could create distrust of many of the Libyans.

The UN envoy for Libya, Bernardino Leon, announced in night from Thursday to Friday the formation of a Libyan government of national unity headed by Fayez el-Sarraj with three deputy prime ministers. Meitig Ahmad Fathi el-Mejbri and Moussa al-Koni.

” After a year of efforts in this process with more than 150 Libyan personalities representing all regions, the time has finally come for us to propose the formation of a national unity government, “said Bernardino Leon during a press conference in Skhirat, Morocco, where negotiations had resumed Monday between Libyan rival camps.

Two parliaments

Since the fall of Gaddafi, Libya is experiencing a political situation very complicated. A Congress was elected in 2012 and headquartered in Tripoli since. An election in 2014 appointed a parliament that was to replace the Congress. But the latter refused to resign, parliament was forced to sit in Tobruk. The country is under the influence of two assemblies claiming their legitimacy. This complicated political situation is inherited partly from the Gaddafi regime has always used the tribal rivalries, very strong in the country to maintain its power.

The international community recognizes the Parliament of Tobruk and therefore disputes that the Congress Tripoli. The United Nations envoy for Libya has fought hard to try to reach agreement all parties involved where tribal and regional interests mix.

Hours after the announcement of Bernardino Leon, calls for demonstrations against the new government invading social networks. To the question “which calls for a demonstration?”, A Libyan political activist who prefers to remain anonymous told us “the people”.

“A minister has already announced on Libyan television that he renounced his post ”

Moes Abumustafa Ben Ismael, a former parliamentary candidate for the Tripoli area

For him, the agreement is totally unfair because on seven appointees to the transitional government, just five Misrata. If this city was the nerve center of resistance to Gaddafi, the other regions claim their right to participate in political life.

“Bernardino Leon has made his show by announcing a national unity government says Moes Abumustafa Ben Ismael, a former parliamentary candidate for the Tripoli area. But one of the ministers whose appointment was announced Thursday night has denied its involvement in the Libyan television. ” Moes bin Ismael criticizes UN envoy not to respect the sovereignty of Libya, to ignore its history made of rivalries between different regions and ethnic groups.
