Libya: 1,200 migrants evacuated to Chad

GENEVA – On Monday  The International Organization for Migration says more than 1,200 migrant workers and family members sheltering in the southern Libyan city of Sabha are being evacuated to Chad.

These nationals from 11 countries are “extremely relieved” to leave the city, where they were stranded for weeks in a transit center, said the Head of Mission of IOM in Chad, Qasim Sufi.

Fighting between pro-and anti-Gaddafi had prevented the IOM to evacuate or even to send them for help when the city including lack of water and electricity.

The group evacuated, including women and children, has taken the road on a convoy of 15 trucks on Sunday. The journey to Chad is expected to take about a week.
