Italy: 35 injured in clashes between police and immigrants

Nearly 35 people including 20 policemen, were wounded in clashes between security forces and Italian immigrants living in a shelter in the region of Puglia (south) on Monday, reported Italian media.

According to various reports on Monday morning, hundreds of immigrants armed with stones and iron bars blocked a highway and a railway track in protest against the slowness of procedures for recognition of refugee status and granting of temporary residence permits.

Police units were dispatched there to try to calm the protesters. The protest quickly degenerated into disturbances that have approximately 35 wounded on both sides.

Since the beginning of the year, Italy is facing a massive influx of refugees from countries of North Africa in the grip of a wave of unprecedented popular protest. Most immigrants arrive on Italian island of Lampedusa, where they are transported to other centers.
