Every week the Italian Navy, though lonely, trying to avoid a new tragedy of immigration. And without their intervention on Wednesday, hundreds of people could in turn lose their lives.
Approximately 2,700 migrants have indeed been saved during this single day Wednesday off the southern Italy in 13 different operations, announced in the evening the Italian Coast Guard.
These migrants were aboard nine dinghies and four other boats. Several ships were involved in rescue operations, mainly off of Sicily, according to a Coast Guard. The occupants of five dinghies were rescued by the ship Bourbon Argos Doctors Without Borders (MSF), while the German military ship Werra rescued him Migrant two other canoes.
At least 1900 died since the beginning of the year
Three ships have instead had to participate in relief operations of a boat carrying 681 migrants alone, the source said. According to estimates by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) dated July 10, more than 150 000 migrants arrived in Europe by sea since the beginning of the year, half in Italy, where arrivals are still higher than the records set in 2014 and half in Greece, where they are growing exponentially.
