Israel / Hamas: the release of Palestinian prisoners began

Israel began to release Palestinian prisoners as part of the swap deal to free Corporal Gilad Shalit, reported the spokesman of the Israeli Prison Authority, Sivan Weizman.

“We started the release of prisoners in accordance with the list established. The first detainees were made to employees of the Red Cross, the terminal of Kerem Shalom, on the border with the Gaza Strip,” said the speaker of the agency.

Earlier in the day, Hamas announced that Corporal Gilad Shalit was handed over to Egyptian authorities.

Under the agreement signed October 11 by Israel and Hamas, 1027 Palestinian prisoners should be released. The document provides for the release of a first group of 477 prisoners, including 315 serving life sentences in exchange for the release of Gilad Shalit, kidnapped on 25 June 2006 at the edge of the Gaza Strip. The second group expected to be released two months later.
