Israel and Egypt exchange prisoners

On Thursday the Israeli authorities released 25 prisoners  in the Egyptian part of prisoner exchange between two states, told a representative of the Israeli prisons department.

“There is about one hour, 25 people have left their place of detention. They are en route to Eilat (on the border with Egypt, ed) where they will go to the Egyptian side,” said the interlocutor of the agency.

Israel reached an agreement with Egypt for the release of Ilan Grapel of Queens, who also holds Israeli citizenship. According to Egyptian intelligence, he would have urged demonstrators to attack the Egyptian military and police.

Almost all of the Egyptians imprisoned in Israel are not connected with politics. They are accused of illegal entry into Israel, drug trafficking, illegal possession of weapons.

This exchange became possible after the success of the Egyptian mediation in the implementation of the Agreement between the Jewish state and the Islamist movement Hamas for the release of Gilad Shalit against more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners.
