Iran: Australia plans to join the embargo

Australia plans to join the Iranian oil embargo imposed Monday by the countries of the European Union, said the Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs Kevin Rudd quoted by Reuters on Tuesday.

“As for Iran, I want to be clear (…). Australia will take similar measures”, said the Australian foreign minister who is visiting London.

Monday, January 23, the foreign ministers of the EU imposed an embargo against Iranian oil exports against the backdrop of heightened tensions around the nuclear program led by Tehran.

The Iranian Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad-Najjar has said that the new European sanctions would not affect the Islamic Republic but would affect the economy of Europe itself.

The United States and some other countries accuse Iran of wanting to develop atomic weapons under cover of a civilian nuclear program. Tehran denies the accusations, saying its nuclear research for the sole purpose of meeting the needs of the country’s electricity.
