Indonesia issued a tsunami warning Wednesday after an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 8.7 hit waters off westernmost Aceh province, a tsunami alert was triggered for the entire Indian Ocean, reported Western media.
The epicenter of the quake was located 495 km southwest of the city of Banda Aceh and 1,029 km west of Kuala Lumpur, capital of Malaysia. No destruction or casualties were yet reported.
Indonesia is the country in the world concentrating the largest number of earthquakes. In 2004, the most violent earthquake in the world for 40 years about 150 kilometers off the west coast of northern Sumatra . It caused a tsunami that killed hundreds of thousands of people in 12 countries of the Indian Ocean.
