Honduras / prison: Death toll of the fire rises to 382

Death toll of the fire that destroyed a prison in Honduras reached 382 on Thursday, reported the CNN on Friday.

The previous record of 357 reported victims. The prison population was about 850 inmates.

Two possible causes of the accident are being studied by investigators: that of a short circuit and that of a prisoner who set fire to a mattress.

The bodies were transferred to the capital, Tegucigalpa, where their identification is underway.

“We hope that we will make the body and that we can leave. We wait here with our children but no one gives us an answer,” said Francisca Gomez, the sister of one of the victims.

In 2003, 68 inmates of the prison in La Ceiba Honduras were killed in a fire. In 2004, 107 prisoners have died in a fire that hit another prison in San Pedro Sula.
