Haiti: Martelly is committed to restoring the army

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – On Thursday Haiti’s president said he was determined to move ahead with its controversial project to rebuild the country’s army.

Michel Martelly told reporters in Port-au-Prince that he would restore the military even if the project does not rally supporters.

He said that the future would be a Haitian military force designed for modern backup in case of natural disasters and the protection of maritime and land borders.

The project to restore the president’s army was released two weeks ago, after the Associated Press had obtained a document that explained the objectives of the future force.

The project is controversial. The Haitian army has conducted several coups and committed numerous violations of human rights before being disbanded in 1995.
