Guatemala: a former general won the presidential

On Sunday  the former general Otto Perez Molina leads the second round of presidential elections held in Guatemala, announced the country’s Supreme Electoral Tribunal.

After the counting of 90.44% of the ballots, Mr. Perez collects 54.89% of the vote ahead of almost 9.8% of his opponent Manuel Baldizon.

The first round was held on September 11.

The former military proposes stringent measures against organized crime and high levels of poverty, the two main problems of the country. According to data from the World Bank, Guatemala was the first country in the Western Hemisphere in terms of murders (almost 45 murders per 100,000 deaths).

The majority of Guatemalans are hoping that Mr. Perez will strengthen security in the country with an iron fist.
