Five young Palestinians, including a teenager, were killed and 21 others wounded Friday by Israeli fire during clashes in the Gaza Strip in areas near the border with Israel, said the emergency services of the enclave.
This is the first Palestinians to be killed in clashes in the Gaza Strip since the escalation of violence between Palestinians and Israelis on 1 October. Mohammed al-Raqab, 15, was killed when Israeli soldiers on the other side of the fence enclosing the area responded to young Palestinians throwing stones, east of the city of Khan Yunis (southern) . Ahmed al-Hirbaoui, Chadi Daoula and Abed al-Wahidi, all three aged 20, were killed in similar clashes east of Gaza City.
Since October 3, eleven attacks with knives
Twenty-one other Gazans were wounded, several seriously, in the clashes. “About 200 Palestinians approached the security fence, throwing stones and burning tires on the barrier and Israeli security forces. Onsite forces responded by shooting the main instigators to prevent them from moving forward and disperse riot, “said a spokesman for the Israeli army, adding that the clashes were still ongoing.
The West Bank, Jerusalem and Israel are plagued by violence daily since early October. Three young Palestinians were killed in the West Bank and in East Jerusalem occupied during clashes with soldiers. In addition, since October 3, eleven attacks with knives, mainly from young Palestinians, left two people dead and thirteen wounded Israeli or Jewish. Five of the suspected assailants were killed.
The Gaza Strip and Hamas Islamist movement that controls have so far remained largely away from the violence. Hamas leader in Gaza, Ismail Haniyeh, said Friday that the latest violence was a new intifada, after the Palestinian uprisings of 1987 and 2000. “We call to strengthen and intensify the intifada. Gaza will fulfill its role in the intifada Jerusalem and is more than ready for confrontation, “he said.
