Fukushima: high levels of radioactive cesium in rice

TOKYO – On Saturday  the Japanese government announced it had ordered further tests after being found significant levels of radioactive cesium in a sample of rice in the region of Fukushima (North East)

Rates reaching the legal limit of 500 becquerels were measured in a sample from a rice field in Nihonmatsu, 55km west of the nuclear power plant in Fukushima, injured after the tsunami of March 11.

Analyses have been carried out in 400 locations in the prefecture of Fukushima. The highest levels measured to date were 136 becquerels per kilo, an official of the prefecture.
