“Friends of Syria”: Turkey plans to hold another meeting

Turkey intends to convene another meeting in Istanbul of “Friends of Syria”, Turkish media reported citing Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu on Wednesday.

On Tuesday the Turkish foreign minister said that the country’s authorities were working to organize a new meeting to obtain “effective results” as the conference of “Friends of Syria” which has held in Istanbul in early April this year, indicate the media.

The conference of “Friends of Syria” has recognized the Syrian National Council (CNS,external opposition) as the legitimate representative of the people. The CNS, the maincoalition of Syrian opposition, brings together 230 opponents, both residing in Syria and abroad. Its formation was announced on 2 October in Istanbul.

On 24 May, President of CNS Burhan Ghalioun resigned. The election of a new leaderwill take place at a meeting scheduled for 9 and 10 June

Since mid-March 2011, Syria has been rocked by a protest movement against theregime. According to the UN, the military confrontation would have already killed more than 9,000 dead and some 230,000 refugees. The West promotes the departure of President Bashar al-Assad. Despite a cease-fire, established under the peace plan drawn up by Kofi Annan, many attacks are perpetrated in the country. In addition, a UN mission was sent to Syria.
