Fire in Tenerife: nearly 2,000 people evacuated from a village in the island

MADRID –  Fierce forest fire forced the evacuation of nearly 2,000 people from a village in Tenerife, a Canary Islands located in the Atlantic Ocean, announced the Spanish authorities on Wednesday.

The people of Vilaflor, a village on the edge of Teide National Park, were evacuated Tuesday night, said the spokesman for emergency services Carmina Lorenzo. The park itself was not threatened by the disaster, nor the popular tourist resorts of the island.

Firefighters had to reoucrs water bombers and helicopters to try to extinguish the fire, which started three days ago, destroying more than 2,000 hectares of forest, said Carmina Lorenzo. AP
