Explosions in Thailand: four dead and 40 wounded (media)

At least four people were killed and 40 wounded in triple bomb attack Saturday night in southern Thailand, said the New China News Agency (Xinhua) referring to the Thai media on Sunday.

The newspaper Bangkok Biz News, the bombing took place in Yala, capital of the eponymous province in the grip of a separatist conflict. The information website for Thai Rath reports that three bombs hidden in cars exploded one after another.

Police suspect separatist groups to be behind the attack.

In the past, the three southernmost provinces of Thailand – Narathiwat, Yala and Pattani – were part of the sultanate of Pattani subservient to Bangkok. In the early twentieth century, following agreements between the Kingdom of Siam (now Thailand) and Malaya (now Malaysia), the sultanate was engulfed by Siam and its territory divided into three provinces .
