Ex-banker, Andris Berzins became the new President of Latvia

Saeima of Latvia at the second attempt elected as president of the country the parliamentarian and a former banker Mr Andris Berzins today. Berzins will take the presidency for the next four years, his candidacy is supported by secret ballot, 53 deputies. The nececssity to win at least 51 votes are required out of 100.

In Latvia, the president selects the Seimas, a unicameral parliament. The president’s office claimed the two candidates – incumbent President Valdis Zatlers and Berzins former head of the Chamber of Commerce Industry of the country.

On May 28 Valdis Zatlers announced the dissolution procedure ceyma. Earlier Sejm refused to combat corruption and search the house of the deputy and businessman Ainars Slesers, who is suspected of corrupt dealings. The President said that he considered his duty to act for the good of the country, and despite the fact that it will cause constitutional and political difficulties, he decided to dissolve the Sejm.
