Earthquake in northern Japan (6.8)

TOKYO – A strong earthquake struck northern Japan on Wednesday night, causing a tsunami warning along the Pacific coast.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake was 6.8, with a tsunami of about 50cm announced on the central island of Hokkaido, the Pacific coast and the prefectures of Aomori and Iwate.

The epicenter was 235km south of Kushiro, on Hokkaido Island, 26km deep.

The earthquake was not felt in Tokyo, located 730km.
