TIRANA, Albania – The last communist president Ramiz Alia of Albania died Friday morning at the age of 85 in Tirana, said the spokesman of the Presidency Mimoza Kociu. He died of pulmonary complications.
Ramiz Alia was elected in the country’s first multiparty elections in 1991, several months after the fall of communism. He resigned a year later, after the victory in March 1992 the newly created Democratic Party.
Alia had become the leader of the Communist Party after the death of dictator Enver Hoxha in 1985.
