ConocoPhillips China: new oil spill in the Bohai Bay

Chinese subsidiary of the international oil company ConocoPhillips (COPC) recognized to have discovered a new oil spill on its platform in Bohai Bay, the Chinese media reported on Friday.

The company had already reported two leaks on the oil platform operator Penglai 19-3 field. So far, the amount of oil-based drilling mud that has leaked is valued at 2,500 barrels. The coastal provinces of Hebei and Liaoning have been polluted.

Peng Lai 19-3 field is explored jointly by ConocoPhillips China and Chinese state-owned China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC). The two companies have already apologized for the spill.

Discovered in 1999, the Peng Lai oil field was first brought into production in 2002. A second phase of development added five drilling and production platforms and an FPSO vessel, which started production in May 2009.
