AU Summit: the head of state elected President of Benin

The Head of State of Benin, Thomas Boni Yayi was elected the African Union Chairman on Sunday, announced the president of Equatorial Guinea Teodoro Obiang Nguema, who held the position previously cited by the Western media .

“I congratulate the new president of the African Union, Mr. Thomas Boni Yayi. I have no doubt that with your great authority (…) you will implement our goal of peace and security , “said President of Equatorial Guinea at the 18th AU summit currently underway in Addis Ababa.

The position of President of the AU as an annual rotation position, the president of Benin has won two other candidates, the Gambian President Yahya Jammeh, and Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan.

At this summit, African leaders must also elect the new president of the AU Commission, its executive body, and choose between incumbent Jean Ping of Gabon, and South African Minister of Home Affairs, Nkosazana Dlamini -Zuma, former foreign minister and former wife of President Jacob Zuma.
