Athens: more than 400 people arrested during a police operation

On Thursday 430 people were arrested in Athens, during a police operation in crime prevention, police reported Friday.

Almost all of those arrested are non-Greek migrants. Police carried out more than 1,000 identity checks. Several drug-related crimes, theft, prostitution and violation of immigration laws were discovered during this operation, in which 400 police officers took part.

For two years, the Greek authorities try to control the situation in central Athens, where a large influx of illegal migrants was found on a background of financial crisis, mass disturbances, strikes and incessant protests.

Policy on immigration was recently tightened. Several non-governmental organizations and leftist parties have criticized these new initiatives, suspecting they were enacted for political purposes. Early parliamentary elections will be held in Greece in early May. For the first time, neo-fascists are running.
