Abkhazia: U.S. hindering the recognition (diplomacy)

Several countries have moved away to recognize the independence of Abkhazia because of the pressure and even direct threats from the United States to deprive them of financial assistance, said the Abkhaz foreign minister Vyacheslav Tchirikba, visiting Moscow on Wednesday.

“Countries that have built the respect of human rights and the aspiration for democracy in foreign policy doctrine, have in fact announced a crusade against Abkhazia and South Ossetia, against their output isolation International, “said the minister.

He added that it was blackmail and threats to a very high level, including at the U.S. Secretary of State, who did not hesitate to call the heads of state getting ready to recognize the Abkhazia or previously recognized.

M.Tchirikba have said letters containing implicit threats to stop financial aid to countries that had recognized Abkhazia and summoning them to return to this recognition.

According to him, the EU has struggled actively against the recognition of Abkhazia in 2008.

“There have been threats against Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and other countries,” said the minister.

Russia recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia August 26, 2008 following a military offensive launched by Tbilisi against Tskhinvali, South Ossetian capital. The Georgian military had destroyed the city and killed hundreds of civilians and Russian peacekeepers deployed in this former Georgian autonomy.
