A bluefin tuna reached a record price of 570,000 euros in Tokyo

TOKYO – It’s a sushi to eat carefully. On Thursday a bluefin tuna caught off the coast of northeastern Japan, has reached a record high in the first auction of the fish market in Tsukiji, Tokyo, reaching 56.49 million yen (571,800 euros). The price of tuna 269kg beat the previous record of last year to 32.49 million yen (328,500 euros).

This corresponds to 210,000 yen per kilogram (21,233 euros), also a record, said Yutaka Hasegawa, an official from Tsukiji market.

If the fish is of undeniable quality, the price is more due to the atmosphere surrounding the first auction of the year. The buyer Kiyoshi Kimura, president of Kiyomura, a chain of sushi restaurants, Sushi Zanmai, said he wanted to give Japan a boost after the deadly tsunami of last year.

“Japan has faced a lot last year because of the disaster,” said Kimura APTN. He also announced that the tuna would remain in Japan “rather than let him go abroad.”
