Violent crimes down 6% in the U.S.

WASHINGTON (AP) – The number of violent crimes fell by 6% last year in the United States, the fourth consecutive year of decline, according to figures released by the FBI on Monday .

Attacks against property also declined for the eighth consecutive year, falling by 2.7%.

In total, an estimated 1.2 million violent crimes committed in 2010, while nine million property crimes were reported. Thefts were were down 10%, rapes by 5% and murder and manslaughter over 4%.
