Two Latvian hackers arrested over ‘scareware’ scam

On Tuesday two Latvian citizens were arrested in Rezekne (Latvia) at the request of the United States, who accuses them of fraud on the Internet for an estimated $ 74 million, said Wednesday the U.S. Department of Justice.

Peteris Sahurovs, 22, and Marina Maslobojeva, 23, were arrested in connection with the operation called “Trident Court.” on Tuesday.

“With the help of international partners, the Justice Department and FBI have arrested two Latvian citizens. The operation netted 40 computers, servers and bank accounts which were used by the criminals. The damage done by these cyber-crooks is estimated 74 million dollars, “reads a statement in the FBI.

Using the software “scareware” scammers pretending to users that their computer was infected and offered to buy their antivirus software.
