California Wal-Mart Tries Online Grocery Delivery

Wal-Mart has created “Walmart To Go”, which is an online grocery store and delivery service.  Wal-Mart started trying it out it San Jose, California. Wal-Mart groceries and other items can be ordered online and be delivered to homes only in this area.

Most products that can be found in a WalMart Market or their Supercenter’s grocery section, can be ordered. Items such as meat, seafood, bakery, produce, frozen foods, household items, baby products, over-the-counter pharmacy, and health and beauty products. The convenience of having these items delivered directly to the door will greatly benefit busy parents, those confined to their homes, and people who just like the ease of having things delivered.

Walmart has been tweaking their online grocery program for about two years. They have been analyzing how cost effective it will be, especially with the delivery of perishable items. Walmart in-store grocery made about $140 billion in sales revenue last year. Groceries are a huge part of that revenue. It accounts for about 54 percent.

Online grocery delivery is not a new concept. Mostly large metropolitan cities that don’t rely on cars for their main transportation, like New York City, have a number of grocery delivery options. This helps when buying for the month and cutting out the need to grocery shop every day. Also when buying items to heavy to carry home, the grocery delivery option comes in handy. In other more car-oriented cities, the big names in online grocery delivery are Amazon Fresh and Peapod. Sometimes the local grocery store offers delivery on select items for a fee.

Currently, Amazon Fresh and Peapod are Wal-Mart’s main competition for online grocery delivery.
