Geek Tip: Properly set up your smartphone before you go abroad

holiday, I forget everything … except good setup for my smartphone do not end up with a long arm and invoice as salty as the Dead Sea the following month.

Immerse yourself in options your package
More and more mobile subscriptions include homelessness in some countries (eg Free Mobile has announced that for the whole of the European Union) at 35 days per year (either more or less the number of vacation days the French) but this is not always the case. And the destinations included in the package vary from one operator to another and from one formula to another. It is therefore necessary to connect to the website of your service and look at the details of your subscription to see if your destination country is one of the lucky ones. Take the opportunity to ensure that the “World” option to your package is activated, it is not always the case. This will allow you to subscribe to specific offers of your provider when you locate abroad.

No package that includes roaming? Three possible
If, unfortunately, your plan does not work where you go on vacation, three options: not to touch his phone on holiday, take a local SIM card and a short-term contract to arrival in the country or take out an option (often quite expensive and limited) by your operator. In the latter case, look ahead the different formulas rather than waiting SMS arrival. Warning, it can take 24 to 48 hours for activation. Good to know: a package of 500 MB of data is approximately 25 minutes from surfing, sending / receiving messages and downloading 9 of seven applications. In short, it can go very fast, especially if you use the GPS and mapping.

Prevent data consumption in abroad …
Watch Facebook every 10 minutes, raise mails twenty times a day, do a web search for a yes or a no … so many bad habits to give up when you go on vacation. The occasion also to disconnect. At a minimum, you will have to prevent unwanted connections that are expensive and invoiced in addition to your package
. – On an iPhone, go to Settings, Cellular network and make sure that ‘Data Roaming is disabled. Warning, do not enable the new option appeared (“Internet EU”), this will block homelessness
. – For Android smartphone (the path may vary slightly depending on the brand of the phone and Android version), go to Settings, Wireless & network, mobile network and make sure Data Roaming is disabled.

Or … make sure to limit the consumption data
For this, you will have to ensure that the number of background tasks are disabled
. – On an iPhone in Settings> Cellular network, down towards the bottom of the page, you’ll find a list (long or short) applications that use cellular data to update. It is better to disable abroad (this can be tedious but you will have time during the trip by plane, train or car). Also do: to Settings> iTunes Store / App Store, disable automatic updates of applications or at least deactivated updates using the cellular data. And General> Update in the background, disable the service
. – On an Android phone go to Settings and Notification Center. Go to the Apps tab and networking applications. Here a list of your apps is displayed and you can limit their updates / use the Wi-Fi only (for all or only some). Attention there installed apps and system applications (two tabs) to manage.

And watch what you have actually consumed
For this, you will have to reset your data usage monitor. As you will know exactly what you have eaten (and that may be useful in case of disagreement with the operator even if it is not a formal proof)
. – On an iPhone
go to Settings> Cellular network and get to the bottom of the page to click on the link “Reset Statistics”
. – On Android, In Settings> Data Usage. There it is possible to consult the traffic and even set an alert if you would reach a maximum level. In addition, only the WiFi will allow you to surf the Net, for example.

Be smart (and stingy)
Here are some ideas to save money:
– Use Google Maps offline (with this geeky trick) by preloading the cards before going abroad
– Hunt free WiFi.. A hotel lobby with free internet, a Starbucks or McDonalds, or sometimes a public bus … many stores that offer free internet access. Unlimited or for a handful of minutes. You do not necessarily need to return (and thus consume) to enjoy. Outside, sometimes captures very well
– Consider also the sharing of connection (read our instructions on this). A friend, a relative may have taken a local package or have a more generous package than yours. In that case, ask them to switch to tethering and enjoy his generosity.
