The Paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius, sentenced to five years in prison last October to have shot dead his girlfriend the night of Valentine’s Day in 2013, will be released prematurely on October 20, announced Thursday the South African correctional services.
The Committee on early release, which met on Thursday, “approved the early release of Oscar Pistorius as of October 20,” according to a statement of the prison service.
Oscar Pistorius is releasable theory since August 21, the South African law allowing involuntary homicide released after serving one sixth of their sentence. His legal troubles are far from over. The Crown, which had considered that the first sentence was too lenient, appealed the first instance verdict. The appeal trial is expected on November 3 .
Oscar Pistorius had acquired hero stature by becoming the first disabled athlete running with valid Olympic Games 2012 in London. The sports both legs amputated so was the pride of South Africa, and millions of disabled people in the world.
A few months later, he made the headlines but in the miscellaneous category, having shot dead his girlfriend supermodel Reeva Steenkamp, locked in the toilet. The former sports has always argued the mistake: he said he thought a thief had broken into his house under protection of Pretoria and was hiding in the toilet.
