Olympics in Sochi: Russia will send the Olympic flame into space

Russia will host the Winter Olympics of 2014, will become the first country to send the Olympic torch into space, said Alexander Zhukov the president of the Russian Olympic Committee on Thursday.

“50 years ago, Russia became the first country to send a man into space. We now have the opportunity to become the first nation to send into space the Olympic torch, and we are proud of,” the official said.

In addition, Mr. Zhukov has unveiled some details of the Olympic Torch Relay 2014. The total length of the trail will reach 27,300 km (which will be a new record). 14,000 participants will carry the flame for 120 days across the top of the word Elbrus (5642 meters) and the bottom of Lake Baikal (about 1600 meters).

The relay will end on February 7, 2014 in Sochi, the day of the opening ceremony of the Olympics. The closing ceremony will be held on February 23.
