Brazil: formal investigation against Sports Minister

RIO DE JANEIRO – The Brazilian Supreme Court opened an investigation into allegations of corruption against the Minister of Sports on Tuesday.

Several people have accused the minister Orlando Silva to be involved in schemes of pots of wine-related social programs funded by his department. These claims could cost him his job, as well as the ability to prepare the country for the World Cup Soccer 2014.

Tuesday, Judge Carmen Rocha asked the Ministry of Sports and federal agencies concerned to provide any information relevant to the investigation.

The press service of the Supreme Court said the investigation had been initiated at the request of the federal Attorney General.
