Basketball: Yao Ming announced his retirement from sport

SHANGHAI (Reuters) – Chinese basketball player Yao Ming, one of the most famous athletes in Asia, announced Wednesday his retirement from the sport at the age of 30 years.

This decision was widely expected after two years undermined by repeated injuries to the former star of the Houston Rockets.

“Today I retire from basketball,” Yao said at a press conference in Shanghai. “Basketball has given me a lot, and I want to thank him.”

Yao Ming, a giant of 2.30 meters, was hired by the Rockets in 2002 during the traditional “draft” of NBA. He was the first foreign player to appear as “first choice” selection.

During his career, Yao has managed an average of 19 points and 9.2 rebounds per game, although it played only five games over the past two seasons.

His fame helped the NBA to significantly expand its audience in China.
