Several explosions were heard in central Kabul Saturday night just after a visit surprise of the US Secretary of State during which John Kerry called the Afghan Taliban to join the peace process. At least two explosions were heard in central Kabul, home to embassies and government buildings, a few minutes after takeoff the plane of the head of American diplomacy.
For now the authorities were not able to specify the nature of these explosions, or if the victims were to be deplored, but the Taliban frequently target government and military targets in the Afghan capital. This visit came at a time when Kabul is trying to bring the Taliban to the negotiating table to end a conflict that has lasted since 2001. But the peace process has stalled because the Islamists refuse any direct dialogue as their conditions n ‘have been fulfilled, including the departure of 13,000 Afghan men foreign troops.
“We talked about our common goal is to launch peace negotiations with the Taliban,” said John Kerry after talks with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani. “We urge the Taliban to enter a peace process, a legitimate process (…) that provides rights and protection for all Afghans and end the violence and suffering they undergo for so many years, “he firmly told.
